Q: The AP3 Armored padlock has a MicroUSB port, does that mean its battery is re-chargeable?

A: The micro-USB port is there to power the padlock if the battery is depleted.  The padlock must be open to change the battery for security reasons, so this feature is required.

The first keyless padlock was rechargeable, and we found that rechargeable batteries did not fit well in the maintenance procedures (everyone preferred a quick swap once every 5 years to periodic charging that takes a while each time), and we found that rechargeable batteries did not hold acceptable charge in extreme temperatures. The current design has a battery specifically formulated for remote conditions.
